Welcome

The need for vital and accurate information has become even more urgent for our young men and women who are studying abroad in view of the many changes the island has been undergoing in recent times. It is in recognition of this fact that government established this website, to provide official and up to date information that will keep you abreast of the latest developments on the island in each area that is of interest to you.

Without doubt, the most profound and transformational change took place on October 10, 2010 when the island territory achieved its long sought after constitutional status of an autonomous country within the kingdom of the Netherlands. This means where education is concerned, all the power and authority which were previously vested in the Federal Government based in Curacao have now been transferred to the government of St. Martin. In particular, you would need to note that the former Department of Education of the island territory has now been transformed into the Ministry of Education. Admittedly, this is still a work in progress and I feel deeply honored and privileged to be at the helm of our educational affairs at this critical period of transition.

Our new constitutional status means greater responsibility for all of us. It must also result in greater accountability for those of us on whom the mantle of leadership has fallen. Improvements in education will be based on one guiding principle: excellence.  I firmly believe that our children deserve the best education they can get, which will make them become the best they can be. That is what all parents, I´m sure, want for their children. That is what I’m certain you want for yourselves, and that is what, without doubt, St. Martin wants from and demands of you: your very best.

To achieve this, it is essential to have an open communication line between you and your government. This website is designed for that purpose. I invite all of you to make good use of it, not only to be informed about whatever new policy direction the new Ministry of Education may embark on, but also to convey your own thoughts and feelings about what needs to be done to ensure that we accomplish our common goals together in an effective and efficient manner.

May I assure you, then, that as your Minister, and as someone who has taught at the tertiary level for some 20 years, I will not only listen to your concerns, but do everything within my power to address them positively.

Let us together build our nation on the solid foundation of an educated citizenry who will have the opportunities to be able to pursue and achieve their dreams to the benefit of one and all.
